The New Year

2015

It seems like yesterday I was writing about what to do for Christmas. Now the presents are opened and Christmas has come and gone, but that doesn’t mean the fun is over. Dallas offers a variety of ways to ring in the New Year. This link New Year’s Eve will take you to Eventbrite with a list of the area celebrations. So find one that is right for you.

If you would rather stay home and celebrate with friends and family, it doesn’t mean you will miss out on the fun. December 1999 I had a party to celebrate the arrival of 2000. Friends came to join us as we said goodbye to 1999.  I asked everyone to bring a dish to share and their favorite beverage. I supplied the cups, napkins, plates and activities. We had karaoke. You can rent a karaoke machine or just hook up a microphone to your own receiver. A friend played Auld Lang Syne on the piano and we all sang along as the old year passed and the new one entered. I had games set up in the garage for kids. And I took each family’s photo as a souvenir. Friends still comment on how much fun they had that evening. We didn’t have fireworks or a professional band. We didn’t have a black-tie dinner or famous guests. There were no expensive gift bags for the guests. All we had to offer was our home and fellowship.

So this year, as you say goodbye to 2014 and hello to 2015 make it special on a large-scale or small-scale. But remember time is the only thing you can never recover. Once the clock ticks to 12:01 am, January 1, 2015; the year 2014 will be one left to remember.

Most of us remember the iconic words, “When I’m stuck with a day that’s grey and lonely, I just stick up my chin and grin and say oh: The sun’ll come out tomorrow, So you got to hang on till’ tomorrow, come what may! Tomorrow, tomorrow, I love you tomorrow. You’re always a day away” from the musical Annie. Whatever happened to that little girl? You can find out this month at The Firehouse Theatre production of the sequel: Annie Warbucks. It is a great opportunity to bring your kids for some fun. Click the link to The Firehouse Theatre’s website. Annie Warbucks.

The Dallas-Fort Worth area offers so many fun activities for everyone during the holiday season. Did you know the origin of the word holiday is “Holy Day”. So as I approach this holiday season, I try to take the time to remember each day is a holy gift from God. There are so many things for which to be thankful. My list is long and includes the simplest moments and the most spectacular moments. So beginning today I am going to begin my I am thankful list.

#1: The rain, the beautiful, wet, life-giving rain.

Halloween is now second to Christmas in the amount of the money spent by Americans. Don’t miss out on the fun this year. Here are some links so you can get your “fright” on this spooky Halloween season. There are activities for all ages. And a quick reminder, as of today, October 20th, we have 36 days until Thanksgiving, 64 days until Christmas and just 71 days until 2015 begins.

So much to do, so little time

One of the best things about living in Dallas are the abundant opportunities you have to experience so many things. Whether it’s a free jazz concert on Thursday nights at the Dallas Museum of Art, exploring the Bishop Arts District and their original boutiques and restaurants, exploring pioneer history at Dallas Heritage Village, or having a picnic at the fabulous Klyde Warren Park you will never get bored. Even after almost 30
Years of living here, my list of things to do is still long.
Too many times we think we have lots of time to enjoy the people and activities nearby. I speak from experience that while some days drag by, the years always fly by. Memories are what create the color patchwork quilt that represents our lives. Don’t waste another minute. Go and live a colorful life.

Dallas vs Fort Worth

0

People that live outside the Dallas-Fort Worth area tend to lump all 7 million people into one big group. For those of us who live here, we understand we have similarities but Big D and Cowtown are two separate and unique cities. Each has something fabulous to offer and from my personal experience both are well deserving of praise.
I’ve decided to explore both cities. I will share my discoveries, successes and failures in doing so. This is purely an experiment and I plan on enjoying my new mission.
